This paper focuses on a relevant aspect of the martyrial narratives that has yet to be studied in depth: the passages in which God intervenes to avoid or to foil a public execution of Christians by the Roman authorities. Added to hagiographic texts for various purposes (religious, political, cultural, etc...) these episodes will become a resource used in Christian literature until the Middle Ages.Downloads
