ARYS. Antiquity: Religions and Societies is a journal co-edited by the "Julio Caro Baroja" Institute of Historiography at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and the ARYS Association. It is dedicated to the study of the complex interactions between religious phenomena and the social structures and dynamics of the ancient world. Its approach is situated at the interdisciplinary crossroads of the history of religions, cultural anthropology, historical sociology, archaeology, and classical studies. The journal pays special attention to how religious practices, beliefs, and representations shape—and are shaped by—the social, political, and economic frameworks of ancient societies. The journal's primary aim is to analyse religion not as an isolated system but as a fundamental component of both public and private life. ARYS promotes research that sheds light on the relational, performative, and material dimensions of religion in ancient contexts of the circum-Mediterranean and Near Eastern worlds, as well as in regions historically connected to these, from the Bronze Age (ca. 3500 BCE) to the formation of Islam. The journal offers a rigorous and open space for exploring the multiple ways in which ancient religions were experienced, represented, and transformed in constant dialogue with the societies that practiced them.
Each volume includes a monographic section with its own scholarly editor, a miscellaneous section, and a book review section.

The journal ARYS. Antiquity: Religions and Societies was originally established as a platform for the eponymous association founded in 1988, whose objectives are to promote research into the social and religious dynamics of the ancient world and to disseminate knowledge in these fields.
In its early years, the publication was hosted as part of a dedicated series by Ediciones Clásicas. Beginning in 1992, the series included not only the proceedings of the Association’s annual meetings, but also other volumes, such as the Homenaje a José María Blázquez, which comprised six volumes, and the Primer encuentro de historiadores del mundo griego, among others. This original ARYS series produced eight issues, encompassing a total of fourteen volumes.
Over time, the ARYS Association resolved to transform the series into an annual journal, with the aim of securing a stable and recognisable level of scholarly quality. The Publications Service of the University of Huelva welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, supported by the unwavering financial backing of the University itself. Consequently, the journal's first volume appeared in 1998, initially on a biennial basis and from the outset adopting a peer-review process. Since 2010, the journal has been published annually, and since 2014 it has been jointly edited by the ARYS Association and the “Julio Caro Baroja” Institute of Historiography at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. In 2016, the publishing house Dykinson also joined the endeavour.
