Misframing democracies

Globalization has generated new challenges for political representation rooted in what Nancy Fraser has called a misframing of political communities (and subjects) in relation to the problems and injustices they suffer. However, an approach rigidly tied to the state framework still prevails. While this approach may have been adequate in the past, it appears to be disconnected from the globalized and interdependent world in which it operates today. This article presents and analyzes Fraser's concept of misframing and its theoretical and practical implications for contemporary democracies. Its ability to connect the theory of justice and the theory of democracy, assuming a transnational perspective, makes the concept of misframing a particularly useful tool for understanding and addressing some of the fundamental challenges we face today.
