Abstract

To have authority is to have a legitimate claim to obedience. In modern political and legal philosophy, the claims of authority must be reconciled with the autonomy of persons as rational agents. This paper is focused on the authority of law according to legal positivism, analyzing its limits from an immanent point of view as well as from an anti-positivist perspective.
