Abstract

In Ecuador, in recent years, there have been several episodes of protest led by the indigenous movement. The events of 2019, 2022, and 2025 have shown elements of continuity with the indigenous uprisings of the 1990s, but there have also been some new aspects. This article explores the idiosyncrasies of these events, arguing that we are facing a new era for indigenous uprisings in which, despite a cross-cutting opening up of the indigenous movement, identity essentialism has not been abandoned.
