Abstract: This paper takes into account the evolution of historical studies on the women of Antiquity in Spanish historiography, from its origins in the 1980s to the present. It also takes into consideration today’s acknowledgment of the need of that inquiry into the past, and the breakthrough brought about by the research done into the situation of women in Antiquity. It begins by analyzing the pioneering research on women’s history, comparing the visions of US and French historiography; despite their conflicting views, gender is a category that has prevailed in the interpretation of the past. In the face of the so-called crisis of social history and the progressive advancement of cultural history and even of post social history, the concept of gender seems to have exerted a powerful influence on that transformation. These conceptions of history can be seen in the work of Spanish women researchers on women’s history and/or gender, as well as in the work of those specializing in the study of the societies of Antiquity. Lastly, this paper attempts to see to what extent gender studies are inserted into cultural history in the specific case of Spanish historiography, and to find out whether they helped promote that kind of study among specialists on the study of Antiquity.

Key words: Spanish historiography, Antiquity, gender, women, social history, cultural history.
