Abstract: The article is both an introduction to the volume and a little presentation about the ecclesiastic role in the historical knowledge between XVI and XVIII century. The historia sacra, which is defined as a forehanded understanding of the history after the thoughts of Melanchthon, quickly begins to develop itself to a new meaning, thanks to its first disciples, which is the historia ecclesiastica, in the sense of being a part of the universal history together with the historia profana and the historia letteraria (erudition history). In the XVIII century, a new recomposition of the knowledge fields brings to an ecclesiastic history, which goes through two perspectives: the institutional history of the church and the history of the religious ideas.
