La cartografía histórica de Jaume Vicens Vives

Abstract

La obra y la persona de Jaume Vicens Vives son capitales en el desarrollo
de la cartografía histórica en España. Como autor, la puso 01 día
introduciendo en ello las novedades expresivas que se difundieron desde
la década de 1920 y que acabarían definiendo la actual cartografía
para masas. Como editor, los atlas y libros de texto de su sello Teide
contribuyeron en gran medida a la difusión del conocimiento histórico
durante más de tres décadas.
Por otro lado, los mapas y los esquemas forman una parte esencial de
la obra de Vicens, pues le proporcionan unidad y refleja.n su afán de
síntesis. El historiador catalán nunca separó los acontecimientos y procesos
históricos del marco geográfico en que tuvieron lugar. Por eso,
usó la cartografío y el grafismo como medios de divulgación, como
auxiliares para la enseñanza, pero sobre todo como dispositivos para
pensar históricamente. En suma, Vicens veía y dibujaba la Historia antes
de escribirla.

Summary: The life and works of Jaume Vicens Vives hove been vital for the development of historicol cartography in Spain. As an author, he managed
to bring it up to date by introducing expressive innovations that were
spread from the 1920s onward, giving rise to the current mass cartography.
As a publisher, the atlas and text books produced by his publishing
house Teide played an important role in disseminating historical
knowledge over the course of more than three decades.
On the other hand, maps and sketches are an essential part of Vicens'
work, for they give it unity and reflect his pursuit of synthesis. The Catalan
historian never separated events and historical processes from the
geographical framework in which they took place. This is why he used
mapping and graphic design not only as means of dissemination -
such as tools for teaching- but also, above 011, as tools to think historically.
In short, Vicens saw and drew History before writing it.
