Geografía e historiografía clásica: el ejemplo de Polibio

Resumen

Se hace un repaso de la geagrafía antigua hasta el período helenístico
haciendo hincapié en su naturaleza histórica. Esto nos lleva definir
el concepto de progreso aplicado al avance de la geografía en la Antigüedad,
ejemplificándolo en el caso de Polibio. El historiador de Megalópolis
constituye un ejemplo paradigmótico de cómo asumir lo más
útil de la geografía matemática sin abandonar la consideración esencialmente
histórica del espacio, huyendo así de cualquier esfuerzo de
abstracción que desvirtúe dicha naturaleza. Este carácter heterogéneo
de la geografía antigua es lo que define verdaderamente su naturaleza
científica.

Summary: This paper presents a synoptic overview of Ancient Geography up to
the Hellenistic Age but focusing on its historical side. Thus, we hove
been forced to deal with the notion of progress of Ancient Geography.
The work of Polybius is illustrative of how it is possible to take the mast
useful data from mathematical Geography and to combine them with o
historical approach. With this effort, he could thus avoid any abstraetion
which might have spoiled the nature of his work. In sum, this heteo
rogeneous character successfully defines the scientific nature of Aneient
Geography.
