Cicerón y el pensamiento religioso moderno

Resumen

Los humanistas leían con fruición a Cicerón, el gran maestro. Sin em'
bargo, entre sus escritos figuraban tratados religiosos, cuyas opiniones
no resultaban siempre compatibles con la doctrina católica. Algunos
humanistas españoles lograrán no obstante encontrar una compatibili·
dad: Pedro Sánchez Ciruelo publicará en 1538 el tratado Reprovación
de las supersticiones y hechizerías basándose en sus escritos religiosos.
La superstición popular, uno de los caballos de batalla de la Iglesia en
esta época, tenía sesgos aún entonces de paganismo. Curiosamente un
autor pagano como Cicerón ayudaría a los humanistas a desbrozar la
religiosidad popular de estas remanencias.
Humanists read Cicero, the great master; with great pleasure. However,
he also wrote religious treaties, whose ideas were not always compat·
ible with the Catholic doctrine. Nevertheless, some Spanish humanists
managed to render them compatible: Pedro Sanchez Ciruelo published
his treaty «Reprovación de las Supersticiones y Hechizerías» in 1538
using Cicero's religious works. Popular superstition, abone of conten'
tion in the Catholic Church at the time, still possessed traces of pagan'
ism. Strangely enough, a pagan author such as Cicero would help hu·
manists to rid popular religiosity of those pagan remains.
