Abstract: Since their beginning, the films and cinema in general have looked to the city as inspiration from several points of view. In this text we will try to analyze the interactions between urbanism and films, exploring the influence and responsibility that architecture and urbanism have in the the archetypal hegemonic city that is also the one that is re-created in films and cinema.Through the so-called ’Cine Quinqui*’ we will study, specifically, the urban growth and sociological phenomenon related with the Spanish economic development of the mid-Twentieth century. We have to consider that the neighborhoods that are co-protagonist in these “Quinqui films”, are consequences from the ’Plan de supresión del barraquismo’ (an urbanistic plan the years when General Francisco Franco was the dictator of Spain, that aims to destroy all the informal buildings or slums from the city limits), help us to discover social relationships and influences from architecture in a generation’s lifestyle. Also, we will see that one specific architecture is featured in “Quinqui Cinema”: open buildings in the surrounding neighborhoods of city centers, with low density, in lengthy rows and generally a poor quality of construction (which were called immediately by critics as vertical slums). So let’s question ourselves, through cinema: Does urbanism determines the social behavior of a city inhabitants?, and if so, urbanism in cinema has been only portrayed following aesthetic criteria, or has been used to explore its impact on reality and citizens?

* For now on “Quinqui films” or “Quinqui cinema”

Keywords: Cinema, city, urbanism, drugs, development policy

doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.20318/semiosfera.2016.3190

<colgroup><col width="393"></col></colgroup>

</table>}, journal={SEMIOSFERA, convergencias y divergencias culturales.
