The ARYS journal (Antiquity: Religions and Societies) was initially born as a vehicle of expression of the homonymous association created in 1988, whose objectives were and continue to be the promotion of knowledge of the ancient world, especially through its social and religious expressions, as well as to improve and favor research and dissemination of these aspects.

During the first years of the Association's existence, the publication found shelter in its own series in Ediciones Clásicas. There were published, since 1992, not only the titles concerning the annual meetings, but also other books, such as the Tribute to José María Blázquez that occupied six volumes, and the first meeting of historians from the Greek world, among others. In total, that initial ARYS series edited 8 numbers, with a total of 14 volumes.

Over the years, the Association decided to convert the ARYS series into an annual magazine to stabilize an equivalent level of quality. The Publications Service of the University of Huelva accepted the proposal with vigor thanks to the unconditional and financial support of the University of Huelva itself. Thus, in 1998 the first volume of the journal appeared, then on a biennial basis and from the beginning with a peer review system; since 2010, an annual periodicity has been imposed and since 2014 it has been published in collaboration between the ARYS Association and the "Julio Caro Baroja" Historiography Institute of the Carlos III University of Madrid, adding the Dykinson publishing company in 2016.
