The Assembly of Masters of the Université de Paris as a Political Model in Nicole Oresme´s Works

Abstract

In a passage of his translation and commentary on Aristotle’s Politics, commissioned by Charles V, Nicole Oresme refers to the Assembly of Masters of the University of Paris. The argumentative network in which the reference is inscribed links it to an expression that Oresme takes from the forbidden text of Marsilius of Padua. The aim of this article is to investigate the argumentative network and the limits and reinterpretation that Oresme makes to the Marsilian theory. This analysis allows a more complete approach, that provides textual support, to one of the first enunciation of a delegative parliamentary model.
