Abstract

Introduction: Instagram is an increasingly popular social network where users post and share photos. Recent research shows relationships between Instagram use and certain eating behaviors or emotional disorders. Objectives: To analyze the effects and consequences of Instagram use on young people's eating behaviors and emotional disorders. Methodology: A systematic review was conducted through health science databases, where 13 articles meeting the selection criteria were included. Results: The use of Instagram is closely related to body image and certain eating attitudes, as well as to emotional disorders. Time of use has been associated with a tendency to develop eating disorders and has been observed to decrease self-esteem as well as cause anxiety or depression in the individual. Conclusion: It is important that future research continue to clarify the role of social networking in the mental health of the youth population, as it may help people with eating or emotional disorders to obtain therapeutic assistance.
