Dobles lecturas de fuentes clásicas en las Admiranda (1598) de Lipsio

Abstract

Justo Lipsio publicó en 1598 Admiranda sive de magnitudine romana
libri quattuor. La obra fue dedicada a Alberto de Austria, gobernador
de los Países Baios españoles desde 1595, y contiene una descripción
histórica del Imperio romano en cuatro libros. Pero también es una
guía política, cuyos conseios hay que entender en el contexto imperial
español de finales del siglo XVI. Este estudio analiza el método historiográfico
que Lipsio empleó para confeccionarlo, así como las consecuencias
de este sobre la imagen del Imperio romano resultante.

Summary: Justus Lipsius published Admiranda sive de magnitudine romana libri
quattuor in 1598. This work was dedicated to Albert of Austria, who
had been the Spanish governor in the Low Countries since 1595, and
it contains a historical description of the Roman Empire in four books.
However, it is also a political guide whose advice must be considered
within the Spanish imperial context of the late 16th century. This study
analyzes the historiographical method Lipsius used for this research as
well as its effecl on the resulting image of the Roman Empire.
