German Military Planning on Long Haul European Neutrals (1940-44)

Keywords: Second World War, neutrality, Third Reich, military planning, Spanish non-belligerence

Abstract

The objective of this article is to make a comparative analysis on German military plans to intervene in the European countries which remained neutrals until the end of the Second World War. To this end the main bibliographical references on each neutral have been studied, in addition to the primary sources in the Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv, completed with other archives. Among the main conclusions it’s to be noted the Spanish non-belligerence as a differentiating factor between Spain and the rest of the European long-haul neutrals: Wehrmacht plans included collaboration with the Spanish Armed Forces, but no with those of the European neutrals, which would be attacked.
