Peace in the Middle Ages. A Historiographical Approach
Abstract
It is easy these days to lose one’s way amidst the myriad publications available on peace in the Middle Ages. The plethora of studies that have seen the light of day, especially since the 1960s, can seem overwhelming. Consequently, the aim of the present article is to offer a helping hand and enable the historian to delve into the bibliography on peace in the Middle Ages. To this end, I outline the historiographical development of this question from its origins in the mid-nineteenth century to the present day, emphasising the connections that can be traced between studies on peace and sociocultural and political scenarios, and offering a selective bibliography for each of the different areas of study.
