La Gran Guerra en la revista La Esfera (1914-1931): ¿Información, opinión o propaganda?

Abstract

Resumen: Este trabajo pretende analizar el impacto de la Gran Guerra –a través de textos e imágenes- y las posturas que se defendieron al respecto en una de las mejores revistas ilustradas españolas del momento, La Esfera. Ilustración mundial (Madrid, 1914-1931). El artículo se centra en tres aspectos fundamentales: 1) Una breve introducción al semanario 2) Una aproximación a sus cronistas de la guerra, a fin de dilucidar si esta revista puede considerarse, o no, un instrumento de propaganda proaliada o germanófila; y 3) Una cala en cómo se trató el inicio de la Guerra a través de las abundantes ilustraciones y fotografías que circularon en el semanario, especialmente, durante los primeros meses del conflicto.

Abstract: Through texts and images, this paper analyses the impact of the First World War on, and the positions defended by, one of the greatest magazines in Spain at the time, La Esfera: Ilustración Mundial (Madrid, 1914- 1931). This article is divided into three sections: 1) a brief introduction to the magazine, 2) an approach to its war commentators, in order to ascertain whether the magazine can be considered a pro-Allied or a Germanophilic propaganda tool; and 3) an approximation of how the beginning of the War was covered using many illustrations and photographs that appeared in the weekly magazine, especially during the first months of the conflict
