Análisis sobre los contenidos de enfermedades raras en la prensa escrita española = Analysis about the contents on rare diseases in the written Spanish press
Abstract
Resumen: Introducción: Los medios de comunicación desempeñan un papel clave en el conocimiento de la sociedad sobre distintas cuestiones, las enfermedades raras son un tema poco conocido y los que las padecen luchan a diario para que los medios de comunicación les ayuden a darlas a conocer. Objetivos: El objetivo de este estudio es analizar los contenidos relacionados con enfermedades raras en prensa escrita española, en concreto en el periódico “El País”, durante el periodo de tiempo comprendido entre 2010 y 2015. Material y métodos: Se trata de un estudio descriptivo, transversal y retrospectivo. Para su elaboración se ha utilizado la plataforma electrónica vLex España®. Resultados: Se recogieron 123 publicaciones de las cuales se seleccionaron 98. El reparto mensual de publicaciones mostró que la mayor parte de éstas se producen entre los meses de Febrero (n=18) y Marzo (n=15). En la clasificación por años se observó una tendencia ascendente en el pasado año 2014 (n=23) precedida de un descenso de contenidos durante los años 2012 (n=12) y 2013 (n=13). Discusión y conclusiones: Pese a la colaboración de algunos personajes públicos y la ardua labor de las asociaciones de enfermos por conseguir una mayor representación de este colectivo en los medios de comunicación, las enfermedades raras aún no son objeto de noticia de forma continuada, centrando la atención en ellas mayormente en periodos coincidentes con distintas celebraciones.

Abstract: Background: Mass media play a key role about several questions on society knowledge. Rare disease is a little-known topic and people who suffer these diseases strongly try the mass media to help them in order to make these diseases more familiar. Objective: The aim of this study is to analyse the contents in Spanish mass media about rare diseases, particularly in the Spanish newspaper “El País” during the 2010-2015 period. Material and Method: It is a descriptive, cross sectional, retrospective study. The “vLex España®” electronic application was used to do the search. Results: 123 publications were gathered, 98 of them were selected. The publications monthly distribution evidenced that most of these publications were produced between February (n=18) and March (n=15). It was observed an upward trend in the past 2014 (n=23) preceded by a decrease of content over the years 2012 (n=12) and 2013 (n=13) in the in the classification for years. Discussion and conclusions: In spite of the collaboration of some popular public figures and the hard effort of the patients´ associations to achieve greater representation of these groups in the Spanish mass media, rare diseases are not still an important point of diffusion among those broadcast media, focusing the main attention at the time of some important events are being performed.
