La información sanitaria autonómica en la prensa diaria: el caso de Aragón = The regional health information in daily newspapers: the case of Aragón
Abstract

Abstract: Issues related to health and healthcare services are considered newsworthy in the context of the Welfare State. In the last decades, the media have increased the attention being paid to this kind of contents, as the academic literature has pointed out. This trend is also noticeable in regional newspapers whose local pages seem to be a little universe in which they have consolidated their presence. The purpose of this investigation is to quantify and characterize the main features of the health-related news that appear in the local pages of the two main newspapers in the Autonomous Community of Aragón. More than one thousand articles published over two non-consecutive trimesters were analyzed, considering variables such as topic, journalistic genre, length or authorship, among others. The descriptive longitudinal study that was developed found out that these newspapers offer a daily average of 2'78 pieces of health-related news. 86% of them belong to the informative genres while the other journalistic genres account for a reduced number of pieces. The main topic in 53% of the news is the management of health services. The regional journals under study seem to focus on this subject much more than on health education or healthy lifestyles.
