Influenza A(H1N1) in the press

Abstract

Introduction: Since Influenza A(H1N1) apperared, an important uncertainty feeling was developed in the population. Much of the information that people received came from the media. Objective: To carry out a descriptive analysis of the Spanish press about influenza A when the pandemic vaccination period against started in November 2009.

Methods: Transversal design based on observation of content about the influenza A(H1N1) published on Spanish written press, the sample has been created by two major newspapers in Spain: El País and El Mundo. And the period of time that has been selected was from 1st to 30th November 2009.

Results: The contents published by the newspapers included information about influenza A(H1N1) in 0,65% of all contents during the analyzed period. Being El País the newspaper that published more information sources used were experts (35%), governmental sources (28%) and international public health organizations (26%). The most recurrent topics were vaccination promotion and information regarding to influenza A(H1N1). Conclusions: At the beginning of influenza A(H1N1) vaccination, related contents were published from varied sources.
